HCV Vegetation in RosebankAfter more than 10 years of extensive scientific investigations and consultation with the community, industry and relevant government agencies –  Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Lismore & Kyogle Councils were preparing to finalise their Local Environment Plans (LEPs).

Then, without consulting affected Councils, the NSW Minister for Planning & Infrastucture, Brad Hazzard, announced he will completely remove all relevant environmental protection zones (E2 & 3) from these 5 Council areas…

“Any E2 or E3 zoned land in these draft plans would be excised when the LEPs are finalised” 1

The Minister will review the excised zones, but the intent of the review seems alarmingly clear…

“this Government is not going to stop farmers and other existing landowners from carrying on their businesses through overly restrictive environmental zones”

This is part of a widespread attack by the NSW Government and industry to dismantle our environmental protections  across the board in order to fast-track development, including:

  • Opening the doors to the Coal Seam Gas industry despite overwhelming public opposition
  • Gutting the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act
  • Pushing to re-open our National Parks to logging
  • Pushing to re-open our National Parks to grazing
  • Mounting a ruthless campaign to undermine the Environmental Defenders Office
  • Privatisation of our State Forests
  • Slashing jobs at the Office for Environment & Heritage
  • Winding back Marine Park protection
  • Allowing recreational hunting in National Parks
  • Reintroducing duck hunting

This is our environment and we must let the government know we will not hand it all over for the sake of ‘development at any cost’.
